Top 5 tips for studying for the Life in the UK Test
How to remember what you study
The Life in the UK Test is based on the official Life in the United Kingdom – A Guide for New Residents handbook. The handbook covers important aspects of British life, including traditions, values, historical events and famous figures throughout the ages. But with so much to discover, how will you remember what you’ve read?
Here’s our top 5 tips:
Study tip #1 - Mind Mapping
If you’re a visual learner, you might find mind mapping a great way to help you study. Mind mapping is a technique that helps organise information by breaking it down into segments. While you read through the official handbook, you can use this technique to break down the chapters and pull the important facts together.
Study tip #2 - Flash cards
Another great way for visual learners to study is with flash cards. The process of writing down what you’ve read and having a question on one side with the answer on the other can be helpful when it comes to remembering what you’ve read. Writing down British public figures and who they were can help you remember the various artists, writers, athletes and more. And if you find it easier to practise flash cards on your phone, remember The Official Life in the UK app has digital study flash cards you can use on the go.
Study tip #3 - Check your knowledge
As you read through the official handbook, take some time to reflect at the end of each chapter. Throughout the reading, you’ll come across boxes titled ‘Check that you understand’ which are great tools to help you think about what you’ve read. Reviewing these will help you remember the key points and dive deeper into your own research on British customs and culture.
Study tip #4 - Rewording what you’ve read
Try Paraphrasing Strategy. This is designed to help students focus on the most important information in a passage and to improve students' recall of main ideas and specific facts. Students read short passages, identify the main idea, and rephrase it in their own words.
Like checking your knowledge, rewriting questions in different ways will help you think about the information being asked. It’s important you don’t simply memorise questions and answers from The Official Life in the UK practice tests, since they are not the actual questions you will get in your Life in the UK Test. No provider of Life in the UK learning materials has access to the live test questions.
Study tip #5 - Time management
During your Life in the UK Test, you will have 45 minutes to answer 24 questions at the testing centre. That’s why it’s important you time yourself when you practise to check you’re able to answer 24 questions within the 45 minutes.
The Official Life in the UK app (on Apple or Android) and e-learning course have mock tests specifically designed with this in mind, so you can test yourself to see how you perform against the clock. You can even check your progress and watch the readiness gauge move up as you improve your mock and quick test scores.
We hope these tips help you deepen your understanding of the learning materials in the official handbook so you get one step closer to passing!
