Special arrangements for the Life in the UK Test

Taking the Life in the UK Test is an important step in your journey towards settlement or citizenship in the UK. We understand that some candidates may need additional support to access the test fairly and comfortably.

To help ensure that all candidates have an equal opportunity to sit their test, a range of special arrangements and accommodations may be available. This article explains what support is available, how to request it, and which accessibility features are already provided as standard at all test centres.

Requesting special arrangements

If you have a disability, medical condition, learning difficulty, or any other circumstance that may affect your ability to take the test under standard conditions, you may be able to request special arrangements.

How to request special arrangements

When booking your test online:

1.   Select "Yes" when asked whether you have any special requirements to sit the test
2.   Choose the option that best reflects your needs
3.   Use the comments box at the bottom of the page to provide any additional information that may help us understand your requirements
4.   Submit your booking request.

Your request will then be sent to our Accommodations Team, who will review the information provided and contact you if further details are required or to confirm the arrangements that can be put in place.

Supporting evidence

In most cases, you will need to provide evidence to support your request. This helps us understand your needs and determine the most appropriate action.

Examples of supporting evidence include:

A doctor's note or medical letter
Documentation from a healthcare professional
An assessment or report confirming a disability or learning difficulty
Other formal evidence relating to the condition or circumstance for which support is requested.

The Accommodations Team will review each request individually and will contact you if additional information is required.

What special arrangements may be available?

The support available will depend on your individual circumstances and the evidence provided. Examples include:

Additional time to complete the test
Supervised rest breaks during the test
Provision of a reader or scribe
Adjustments for candidates with physical disabilities or mobility requirements
Other reasonable accommodations based on individual needs

Each request is assessed on a case-by-case basis to ensure the most appropriate support is provided.

Accessibility features available as standard

Some accessibility features are available to all candidates. Because these features are already available as part of the standard testing environment, candidates do not need to submit a special arrangements request to access them.

Adjustable screen display

Candidates can customise the appearance of the test screen to improve readability, including:

Changing the font size
Adjusting text colours
Adjusting background colours and contrast settings.

Accessible furniture

All test centres have a height-adjustable desk, which can be used by wheelchair users or candidates who require an adjusted workstation.
