Supporting Mental Health Across the Official Life in the UK Test Centre Network

In this blog, we discuss how the Official Life in the UK test centres are working to create supportive environments for test takers.

With World Mental Health Day approaching on 10th October, it provides an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing work taking place across the UK Test Centre Network to help create more supportive environments for test takers, visitors and employees alike.

As part of this commitment, 100% of PSI’s test centres now have at least one employee who has completed accredited mental health awareness and support training, delivered by the British Red Cross.

These individuals act as an approachable first point of contact that help to recognise signs of mental ill-health, start supportive conversations and guide individuals towards appropriate support if needed.

In a test centre environment, where colleagues regularly support individuals undertaking important and sometimes stressful assessments, increasing mental health awareness helps promote a more supportive, inclusive, and wellbeing-focused culture.

To further promote visibility of the support available, mental health awareness posters have been introduced across every test centre, helping to signpost employees and visitors to appropriate points of contact where assistance is needed.

Earlier this year, as part of Mental Health Awareness Week, we also spoke to colleagues from across the network who have taken on the role of Mental Health First Aider within their test centres. We asked them:

  • What motivated them to complete the training
  • Key lessons they took away from the course
  • Why mental health awareness matters within a testing environment.

The feedback highlighted the importance of creating space for supportive conversations and ensuring colleagues feel comfortable seeking help when they need it.

Mental health and wellbeing remain an integral part of our wider people and social value commitments. By investing in accredited training, visible support networks and ongoing wellbeing initiatives, we aim to help employees and test takers feel supported, respected and able to thrive.
